The Customer of this Classic Mustang came to us with a desire to have a daily drivable car, that was going to be reliable and safe.
Some of the issues that immediately came to light was the drum brakes on the front of the car were going to impede stopping distances. The lack of any seat belts and a bit of a clunky noise from the differential, were also going to be things that needed looking into.
As with many restorations or modifications to older vehicles, you dont really know what your going to find and it didnt take long for us a to find a few major snagging points. These included a cracked differential (too many donuts :-) ) and a rusted out floor plan. These were all items that we needed to address on the way to making it a safe drivable car.
The Mustang build was actually done in various stages, with the engine swap and air conditioning requirements being added in the middle of the project.
Once the car was test driven with the new engine, it became very apparent that the performance from the engine was making the car unsafe with the existing suspension setup. Mustangs of this period are well renown for poor handling and this one in particular was very poor. So the customer decided that he would like this addressed and a coil over system, with lowered control arms was utilised. The suspension corner weighting was also setup and the end result was a car that both performed well and handled to a good level.
